HYROX Doubles Strategy: Splits, Communication, and Who Does What

How doubles actually works

In doubles, both athletes run every kilometer together, but station work is shared: one partner works while the other rests, splitting each station however you choose. That single rule creates the entire strategy space — and most teams walk in with no plan beyond 'we'll split it 50/50'.

Note the 2026/27 rulebook enforces a gap penalty when partners separate on the run — you race as a unit.

Split stations by strength, not by fairness

The clock does not care about equity. Put your stronger athlete on the stations where the gap between you is largest, and split evenly only where you are truly matched:

  • Sleds: if one of you is significantly heavier or stronger, they take 60–75% of push and pull.
  • Wall balls: split into short alternating sets (e.g. 15/15) — the resting partner's 30–45 seconds is genuine recovery.
  • Burpee broad jumps: the station where splits matter most; alternate 10 m segments to keep both heart rates survivable.
  • Ergs: near-even splits in 250 m blocks usually beat one athlete doing 700 m.
  • Carries and lunges: these cannot be split mid-length as freely — plan who starts and where the handoff happens at turnarounds.

Communication systems that survive race pain

Agree on the words before the race, because nobody negotiates well at 175 bpm. You need exactly three calls: a check-in ('good?'), a swap call ('change' — spoken one rep before the handoff, not during), and an override ('stay' — the resting partner sees the working partner is moving well and extends the set). Decide in advance who makes pacing decisions on the runs — one athlete owns the watch.

Rehearse handoffs in training: kettlebell set-downs, sandbag transfers, and erg seat swaps are free seconds four times over if they are clean, and a penalty risk if they are chaos.

Train it like a team sport

At least one session per week should be together, at race splits, with race communication. Our program's Saturday compromised sessions are written for doubles by default — partner splits, handoff practice, and communication cues included — with a singles variant for solo weeks.
